For over thirty years, most auto makers have equipped vehicles with the hazardous and obsolete, spring-loaded steering lock, Steering locks cause accidents, have no merit whatsoever, and are chiefly responsible for the fact that auto theft has tripled since their inception in 1969. Auto theft is the number one crime in the United States.
Now in the twenty-first century, General Motors is well underway abolishing the steering lock on most of their vehicles, and replacing it with a safe and effective dash board ignition, that employs modern anti-theft technology which is now a legal requirement on all vehicles sold in Europe. Ford Motor Company has also begun this remedial conversion.
Though, federal law requires Congress, DOT, and the NHTSA to address auto theft, and public safety, they have not taken and significant measures in over thirty years! On their behalf, ASF filed a PETITION with the NHTSA on January 24, 2000. By NHTSA regulatory law, they have one hundred and twenty days to respond to this filing.
When will Congress, DOT , and the NHTSA finally address this crisis, and crime against humanity, that they help create over thirty years ago, with rulemaking that equipped autos with steering locks?
